So here we go! I’ve waited for this moment throughout the summer (at least the latter parts of it), and I feel ready and prepared to take you through this League One campaign in style. Here are my most interesting betting picks ahead of League One round 1.
Posh Against Royals
Reading v Peterborough United
It’s chaos at The Select Car Leasing Stadium. What a horrible stadium name, by the way…! Well, hopefully for Reading’s sake, the football will be better than the aforementioned name. However, I have my doubts. The Royals come into this season in terrible condition, with a slim squad, financial chaos and supporters who are prepared to demonstrate and let their opinions be heard. They have signed some decent players, but punters are speculating that they will need to sell them to achieve liquidity again. That’s why I’ve picked Reading to get relegated this season at 6.00, even though they have players like Andy Carroll and Harvey Knibbs at their disposal. Carroll has been injured the whole summer and he doesn’t suit Ruben Selles’ style of play at all.
Peterborough United are also in transition, although to a lesser and more sustainable degree than The Royals. They have lost some players and their star attacker Jonson Clarke-Harris is bound to leave, but they still have plenty of quality. I expect this game to be entertaining, so my pick for League One round 1 here is Posh over 1.5 goals at 2.25. A Darren Ferguson Peterborough team always scores goals – I think they will do so here as well.
The University Derby
Cambridge United – Oxford United
The “unis” at Cambridge and Oxford are well known and recognized, although I’ve never studied there. This is a game between one side who a lot of people expect to be in trouble at the bottom-end of the table, against one who I think can challenge for the top spot come May next year. Oxford have signed some very mouthwatering players, and I think they have a lot of the tools needed to win a lot of games this year. When we consider that this is probably a game between a relegation scrapper and a promotion fighter, the odds wouldn’t be as close in half a year or so. That’s why I want to get on Oxford right away, although an opening day game at home always gives something extra to the home team. Oxford +0 (exactly the same as draw no bet) at 1.70 is my pick here.
Goals
Portsmouth v Bristol Rovers
Last season, Bristol Rovers (who finished in 17th spot) scored four goals fewer than 5h placed Bolton Wanderers. However, they conceded more than MK Dons, who were relegated. Joey Barton’s management style is unequivocally predictable: he wants his teams to attack and play on the front foot. He always loathes teams who sit back and defend football games. In the summer they’ve signed some very interesting players, while they’ve kept last year’s League One player of the season, Aaron Collins. Going forward, I don’t see many better teams in the division.
Here they come up against a team who doesn’t sit back and defend, although their manager John Mousinho used to be a defender (up until last season, when he retired after getting the Pompey job). I like what they’ve done in the summer window, and I think they’ll be a team to rely on for the over 2.5 bets this season. I anticipate that this will be two of the most open teams, so getting on goals while we can should be wise. That’s why I want to properly capitalize on my expectation, and pick over 3 goals (asian) instead. That means we get our stake back if the game finishes with exactly three goals, and wins if it sees four or more.
Conclusion
Here are my picks for League One round 1:
- Portsmouth-Bristol Rovers. Over 3 goals (asian) @ 2.45.
- Reading-Peterborough. Peterborough over 1.5 goals @ 2.25.
- Cambridge-Oxford. Oxford +0 @ 1.70.
