After a weekend off with FA Cup games, we are back to League One action. Here are my best betting picks ahead of League One round 21.

Gung-Ho?
Peterborough United x Oxford United

The clash of two of League One’s Uniteds when Peterborough host Oxford on Saturday. I’m expecting an entertaining game between two sides who are strong in transition, and who are at their best when there are spaces to attack. Both teams have tricky wingers with an impressive skill set, and both their managers, Des Buckingham and Darren Ferguson, are attack minded by their nature.

Peterborough are currently priced at 1.80, which is understandable, but a bit lower than I’d like it to be. Over 2.5 goals at 1.68 is nowhere near value, either. My bet in this game is Oxford +0.75 (asian handicap) at 1.78, meaning that we get half our money back if they lose by one goal. I think this game could suit them really well.

Manager of The Month
Burton Albion v Stevenage

The team that I have lost the most money betting on this season has been Burton Albion. And that’s because they were my go-to team for betting on corners last season. This year, they’ve not racked up as many set-pieces from the flag as I expected, which gives us a different output in terms of finding value now.

However, they now come up against manager of the month in League One, Steve Evans, and his überdirect Stevenage team. I think we’ll see plenty of crosses, a lot of shots, and just plenty of chaos. I like over 9.5 corners at 1.88, but also understand that regular readers will be sceptical of backing Burton corners again. I just think it’s in their DNA, and struggle to see that change in the near future.

Welcome To The Show, Mr. Taylor
Bristol Rovers v Cheltenham Town

Matt Taylor, the former Exeter City and Rotherham United boss, have now been appointed by Bristol Rovers, following Joey Barton’s departure a month or so ago. His first challenge in the league for Rovers will be against a pretty decent looking Cheltenham side. They are currently priced at 1.55 to beat The Robins, which is lower than I think is fair, considering their strong form (regardless of position in the league table).

This is a very difficult game to preview. What I do know, is that Taylor’s Exeter was attack minded, but that Cheltenham haven’t conceded a lot of goals under new boss Darrell Clarke. This League One round 21 game is not one where I’m betting on anything.

Clash of The League One Titans
Portsmouth v Bolton Wanderers

We don’t have many Monday night games in League One during the season, but the ones that pop up are usually highly interesting.

It’s not a meaningless and poor game to look forward to when 1st placed Pompey take on 2nd placed Bolton Wanderers. It’s probably the game of the season so far.

Yet again, it’s a difficult one to call. Why? Well, both teams are quite free-flowing in their attacking identity, but equally strong at the back. Both have conceded a goal a game or less, and don’t concede a lot of chances. Bolton have been particularly strong away from home, sitting on a record of only one defeat and five conceded goals from eight games.

Fratton Park is one of the fortresses of the league, undoubtedly. Before losing 4-0 to Blackpool in a freak game where everything went in, they had only conceded six goals from nine games. They are, thanks to Colby Bishop, good going forward, but 14 goals from 10 games is less than Lincoln City (with a game less), and teams Derby County, Oxford United, Peterborough and Blackpool, and the same amount as Reading.

I look forward to the game, but think it’ll be quite cagey when the Sky cameras are present. Under 10.5 corners (at 1.72) or under 2.5 goals (at 1.79) are my picks here. You can choose, but I’m going with under on corners.

Conclusion

Three bets from me in League One round 21.
