I’m very happy about my midweek picks in League One, especially taking Oxford United at 4.33 away at Derby. Let’s try to keep that going. For this post, I’m changing the format a bit, so stay with me. Hopefully you enjoy it – here are my betting picks for League One round 4.

My Best Bet
Bolton Wanderers v Wigan Athletic

For League One round 4 I’m laying (betting against) Bolton at home to Wigan, and here’s why:

Bolton are on an amazing run of form. Not only do they pick up great results, their performances have matched the points tally as well. I picked them to make the top 6 at 1.83 before the season, and although we’re only three games in, I like that bet even more now… However, a football team won’t win every game during a season, simple as. There are 46 games in a League One campaign, and you simply can’t win every single of them. I’m betting slightly on that here, bearing in mind that I expect to see some Bolton games where they are unlucky and get stuck.

Wigan Athletic, under Shaun Maloney, fits the bill perfectly to be a party pooper here. They are well organised defensively and are strongly equipped to get something from a game like this. I trust players like Tom Pearce to make them hard to beat. Wigan +0.5 (asian handicap) at 2.02 is my pick for this column: I’m laying Bolton.

Goals!
Shrewsbury Town v Lincoln City

I don’t expect goals here. “We’re not gonna play Shrewsbury away on Saturday and play four-diamond-two and fanning out from the back and trying to get 600 passes – it’s not gonna happen”. Those are the words of Lincoln boss Mark Kennedy ahead of this game, which says it all. The former Liverpool player is very defensively minded and wants his teams to play with control and balance; a gung-ho game doesn’t suit him or Lincoln at all.

The same is true for Matty Taylor and Shrewsbury, who should be a trustworthy team for games with a low number of goals this season. I wasn’t surprised to see Shrews beat Burton in midweek, but scoring two goals a game shouldn’t be the norm for the Shropshire team. Lincoln also scored twice in midweek, but conceded two late goals to give up the win in the end. This is a game that I fully expect to be decided on low margins with little separating the two sides. A 0-0 wouldn’t surprise me, but I’m taking under 3.5 goals & x2 (draw or a Lincoln win) using the Unibet Bet Builder. That gives us a price of 1.83.

The Longshot
Reading v Stevenage

This Reading team could well be in deep s***; I think they are. They replaced half their team in midweek to go for a younger and more energetic bunch of lads, and Ruben Selles was “successful” as his team beat Cheltenham 1-0.

However, Cheltenham are probably the weakest team in the league right now, so that result was far from convincing. Stevenage and their manager Steve Evans are always looking for the long ball forward, trying to exploit set-pieces and crosses into the box.

Carl Piergianni has had eight shots already this season – as a centre half!! – and they generally don’t concede many chances whatsoever, maybe except when they get hit on the break – which rarely happens.

I think Stevenage will bully a young Reading team and look to make the most of free-kicks, corners and throw-ins, which makes this my longshot of the weekend, betting on Stevenage to shut up shop and nick a goal. It won’t be a high scoring match, I think, so if you want to side with Stevenage, you might as well bet on them not to concede in the process; that boosts the odds from 2.88 on the win, to 4.90 on the win to nil.

Conclusion

Here summarized are my betting picks for League One round 4:

  • Reading-Stevenage. Stevenage win to nil @ 4.90.
  • Bolton-Wigan. Wigan +0.5 @ 2.02.
  • Shrewsbury-Lincoln. X2 & under 3.5 goals @ 1.83.
