How does Online roulette work?

Roulette is a game played with three component parts.
There is a wheel with numbered pockets, a ball, and a betting area.
Pockets are numbered alternately from 1 to 36. 18 of the pockets are red and 18 are black.

Depending on the version you are playing, there are either one or two green pockets.
In European and French Roulette, a single ‘0’ pocket is in play.
For the American version, the single zero is joined by a ‘00’ green pocket.

The wheel is spun by the croupier and the ball is released.
Depending on where that ball lands, bets are either won or lost.

How to play online roulette

Before the wheel is spun, players get the chance to place a bet.
There are many different bets you can drop in online roulette and the most common ones:

  • Bets on single numbers from 0 to 36 (known as a straight)
  • Red or Black
  • Odd or Even
  • High (Numbers 19 to 36) or Low (1 to 18)
  • Split - a bet on an adjacent set of numbers that appear horizontally or vertically in the betting area.
  • Street - a bet on three numbers in a horizontal line. 7, 8 and 9 is one example
  • Corners - also known as squares, this is a bet on four numbers that meet in the corner of a betting area.

Those are the main online roulette bets.
There are others and many of those are specific to the various versions.
In all cases, the round of betting ends and the wheel is spun.
Stakes are then won and lost depending on where that ball lands.

What are the different types of online
roulette games that I can play?

American roulette

If you want to fly the flag, you can run with American roulette.
Remember that there are two green pockets in this variant - a zero and a double zero. Otherwise, we have the classic lay out.

The standard version of American Roulette is one of the most popular versions of online roulette on Unibet’s Online Casino in the US.

European roulette

European Roulette has just the one green pocket.
This means that the house edge is marginally reduced.
Play European Roulette using automated software or head to the live casino rooms for an enhanced experience.

Across the wider world, this is the most popular version of the game.

French Roulette

The setup of French roulette is identical to its European counterpart.
We have the single ‘zero’ pocket plus numbers 1 to 36.
The difference is that there are bets that are specific to this variant.

En Prison offers a chance to recover stakes if the ball lands in the zero pocket.
Those bets would have to be the near 50/50 calls - red or black, odd or even etc…
La Partage is similar but this offers an opportunity to recover 50% of outlay.

Lightning Roulette

Aside from the classics, there are roulette games that offer a twist to the regular rules.
One of the more common of these is lightning roulette.

This game follows regular gameplay but the ‘lightning’ element can add multipliers.
Before each spin, up to five numbers are chosen at random.
If the ball lands in the corresponding pocket, certain bets can be met with those multipliers that can reach up to 500/1.

100/1 Roulette:

This is a version of the game which offers over 100 different roulette bets.
As well as the regular bets mentioned above, 100/1 roulette has extra options including pairs and trebles.

There are 105 different bets in total with potential for that 100/1 payout.

Slingshot roulette

Want your roulette action to be fast paced?
Slingshot roulette is the game for you.
It’s available in our live casino rooms but there is no dealer in place.

Slingshot Roulette is automated and it’s very quick.
Available 24 hours a day, it can handle up to 100 spins per hour.

If you have just a short period of time at your disposal, consider the Slingshot.

Double bonus spin roulette

This is based on the American version but it comes with a twist.
Along with the regular 38 spaces, there is a bonus pocket.

The bonus is 50% wider than other pockets on the wheel.
When the ball lands here, a bonus spin takes place with an additional opportunity to win.

All of these games, and more, are listed in our online casinos in the US.
To find them, just type in the word ‘roulette’ into the search bar and all the options will show up.

What types of Casino bonuses and promotions can I use for playing online roulette?

When you visit our Unibet you’ll see a lot our promotions and offers.
Many of these can be used on our online roulette tables.

The most popular one is of course our casino welcome bonus which you can grab when you sign up with us.

Moving forward, ongoing deals can be claimed at regular intervals.
These may include no deposit free chips or matched bonuses on your deposits.
Make sure you always check out the Terms and Conditions on our promos.
Some deals are specific to other games but roulette enjoys its fair share of casino bonuses and promotions.

Tips for playing online roulette

Now that you know the basics of playing roulette online, here are five tips that could help you step up your game when you play online roulette!

We can’t give you any guarantees that all of our tips will be winners but they sure are a good place to start!

#Tip 1:
Start by keeping it simple

If you are new to online roulette, it’s best to start with basic bets.
Those that are close to a 50/50 call are ideal.
They carry less exposure and are useful openers while you are getting used to the game.

Red or Black, Odd or Even, High or Low.
Those are the starting points for most players.
Keep it simple in those opening stages.
In time, you’ll be confident enough to consider some of the more complex stakes.

#Tip 2:
Remember the house edge

Players in the US are naturally drawn to American Roulette.
We get it: It’s the favored option for many and it's the version that we grew up with.
It’s important to remember that house edge.
Because of the two green pockets, any of the regular roulette bets have a marginally lower chance of dropping in.

With European and French roulette, the chances are slightly higher.
That’s because of the lone ‘zero’ pocket.
We are talking about small percentages but it’s a point to keep in mind.

#Tip 3:
Stick to a strategy

There are lots of different strategies when it comes to online roulette.
Some players recommend certain bets over others.
You can spend time taking these on board and they may work for you.

Our advice is to adopt a strategy before you head to the roulette table.
Are you looking at those either / or bets?
Maybe you’ve developed a preference for streets or splits.
Perhaps you like to include the occasional straight bet on a single number.

In most cases, your roulette betting strategy will contain a mix of stakes.
The advice is to stick to a plan.
Don’t stray from the path.
If there is a predominance for red numbers to come in, it doesn’t mean that the pattern will continue.
Pick your strategy and stay faithful.

#Tip 4:
Play within your bankroll

Bankroll management is an important skill to learn for any online casino game.
The bankroll is another term for your account balance.
We all want to promote responsible gambling and we certainly don’t want you to work through your entire balance in one session.

Before you head to the roulette tables, decide the amount that you want to play with and stick to it.

On Unibet you can set limits to your account so that you can ensure that you spend your money wisely and responsibly when you’re playing online roulette on Unibet.
Don’t be tempted to chase losses.

Don’t assume that wins will continue if you’ve had a good session.
It’s all about staying calm and remaining in control.

#Tip 5:
Leverage some online roulette promos and offers

Unibet is all about crazy options and offers!
They can add value to your account, and we don’t want you to miss them if you decide to be our customer!

When you sign up for a new Unibet account, you can opt in for notifications.
